The Gators JV Team Holds the Championship Banner, Feb. 23, 2014

Gators JV Team- League Champions!

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

The Gator JV team captured the Champions Cup with a 3-2 victory over Carmel Catholic High School on Sunday, Feb. 23, at West Meadows Ice Arena in Rolling Meadows.

South fell behind early 1-0, but fought back with three goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead going into the final period. Junior Colin Price got the Gators on the board first beating the Carmel goalie to the short side after an aggressive forecheck from sophmore Leo Johnson kept the puck in the zone and moved the puck to the front of the net.

Freshman AJ Saputa also assisted on the first goal. The Gators grabbed the lead for good 92 seconds later when the freshman duo of Benny Price and Eric Helm struck on the power play. Price found Helm across the slot and Helm fired in a one timer for the go a head goal.

Johnson and C. Price worked hard in front of the net again and, less than 2 minutes later, Johnson slipped the puck between the Carmel goalie's legs to give South a 3-1 lead. Senior Captain Dave Nicholas also assisted on that goal.

From there, the Gators relied on a stingy defense led by Nicholas, juniors Mitch Newberry and Nolan Kremer and freshman Nick Fattori.

Freshman goalie Garrett Wiese was sensational in net, as he has been throughout the playoffs, stopping 26 of 28 Carmel shots. He finished the league playoffs with a 92% save percentage.

A congratulations goes out to all the Gator JV team as they worked hard through the entire season to capture the banner for the first time in school history!

The JV team is comprised of:
Senior: Dave Nicholas (captain)
Juniors: Mitch Newberry, Nolan Kremer (Alt. Captain), Tony Marsella (Alt. Captain), Danny McSweeney, Hayden Hooghkirk (Alt. Captain), Colin Price
Sophomores: Leo Johnson (Alt. Captain), Connor Webb.
Freshmen: Nick Fattori, Benny Price, Eric Helm, Dominic D'Amico, Garrett Wiese, AJ Saputa

Connor Hudak Named to All-State Team

Connor Hudak has been named to the Illinois High School All-State Team for the 2013-2014 season.

Hudak is one of only 12 defensemen from the Illinois High School Hockey League selected to participate in the All-State game scheduled for 8:35 p.m. Feb. 3, at AHAI Hockey Center at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

High school varsity hockey coaches from throughout the state select the top 40 players to participate in the annual All-State game. Scouts and representatives from college and junior teams attend the game in search of new players.

Hudak is senior at Crystal Lake South and has skated with the Gators all four years of his high school hockey career, three of those on the club's varsity team.

"Connor is an active defenseman. He reads the plays as they're happening and is able break up the opponent’s offense and jump up to make it a Gator scoring opportunity. Connor served as the team’s alternate captain as a junior and co-captain this season," Varsity Coach Rich Perillo said.

Hudak was selected to the Junior Varsity All-Conference team as a freshman and the Varsity All-Conference team as a junior and senior. He also was selected to try out for Showcase as a junior.

As of this past Friday, the defenseman had 24 career goals, 73 assists and 97 points making him the all-time leading scorer among Gator defensemen.

For the past 24 years, the Amateur Hockey Association Illinois has been conducting high school All-State games for varsity divisions statewide.
